A recent New York Times article, Under ‘No Child’ Law, Even Solid Schools Falter (10/12), brought to our attention the different standards the various states have adopted to gauge compliance.
The focus of the article is California, which has chosen a small steps first, bigger steps later approach to meeting the goals of No Child’s achievement standards. The crunch is now upon them. It was a gamble that may have been predicated on the law changing by now. Alas, it is not thus!
We note that Maine took a similar approach:
Not so very steep at the beginning, eh?
We have no explanation for such folly. But I’m sure that we’ll be hearing one soon!
