Peer Pressure: It’s Everywhere!

Maybe you read the article Lawmakers to look at new requirements for graduation” in Sunday’s Kennebec Journal.  It was also listed over on the right under “Current Articles.”

A reform of graduation requirements has been a motif over the last few years, with incremental changes occurring everywhere. The effort discussed here is the last big reform push, incorporating the most radical (if I may use the term) changes. As reported however, the changes are not necessarily so very radical.  While eliminating the “seat time” requirement (so old-fashioned!) is spoken of, it’s not at all clear that they would actually let younger students who have otherwise mastered the academic material escape from high school to get on with their lives!

Nevertheless, some on the panel are hesitant to put forward a measure that is “an unreachable fantasy.”  As always, more money sure would help!

Most striking to this reader, though, is Commissioner Gendron’s revelation that what other states think of us is an important factor in her wish to push forward:

However, Gendron said it would be helpful to have new requirements in place.

“It was important to get it to the table sooner rather than later,” she said. “The sooner they have this guidance, the better.”

As other states implement similar revisions to what they require of graduating seniors, Gendron said, Maine should not risk falling behind.

“We’re now being judged across the country: Where does Maine fare?” she said. “We don’t want to be perceived as not having a competitive program in place.”

I guess not! Horrors!
