At one time the only holidays observed throughout the New England States were Thanksgiving Day, Militia Day, and Election Day.  As a treat, voters were served slices of this heavily liquored yeast cake.

The original recipe was supposed to have been developed in the 18th centiury, and was first published in Amelia Simmon’s 1800 edition of American Cookery.  First you must make a raised yeast dough and then, in the second step, you work other ingredients into it.  Frugal Colonial housewives used several cups of any bread dough on hand.  We’ll start from the beginning…
