What does this mean about how boys function — and how they’re treated — in K-12 schools? Matthew Crawford has written a piece called The Case for Working With Your Hands that is making quite a splash these days. It’s the cat’s-paw, if you will, for his just-published book Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work. In it he makes the case for the importance, the worth and dignity [...] It seems a universal truth, at least in the English-speaking world, that school is an aversive environment for boys, particularly boys who are academically inclined. The Observer reports (”Clever boys dumb down to avoid bullying in school“, 3/29/09) on a study that shows boys altering their behaviors so as to not appear too “clever” in school. Clever [...] The first clue was how difficult it was becoming to find enough young boys to cobble together a baseball team. Then, women in prenatal groups started remarking on how everyone in their groups was having girls. Humanity at risk: are the males going first? Domestic violence affects dependent children, who are more prone than their peers to academic failure as well as behavioral issues. This seems hardly a surprise. But it also affects those who share classrooms with them. The researchers linked domestic violence cases to 4.6 percent of the elementary school students in their sample.
